wee Welcome back to a new and exciting school year!! Our theme is "Sailing the Seas of Learning!" So, hop aboard and we will set sail for exciting learning adventures this year!! We are currently using our September menu choices with our novel, Where the Red Fern Grows. This thrilling, emotional novel will enrich your child's reading skills and build empathy as well. We are doing character analysis, studying simple sentences, learning to ask good questions and go back to the text to find answers. Character traits will be explored as well. To develop critical thinking skills we are exploring logic puzzles, analogies and problem solving stories. Wee of Sept. 10-21: We are enjoying our novel, Where the Red Fern Grows. We are learning new words from context clues and also character traits. Critical thinking skills, analogies and logic problems keep us challenged as well. We make inferences from our logic challenges which ties into our reading standards. Week of Sept. 24: Dr. Punctuation is visiting school this week as we dive into use of commas. We are really enjoying our novel, Where the Red Fern Grows, and learning about character traits, and character motives with this great literary work!! Week of Oct. 8th: We are looking at commas, and how to write good paragraphs with task cards and fun games to do this. Vivid verbs are next on the horizon shipmates!! Week of Oct. 15th: We are working on Opinion writing with our novel and also commas in sentences! Week of Oct. 22: This week we are working on opinion pieces as well as vivid verbs! Week of Oct. 29: This week Dr. Punctuation returns for a visit as we learn about conjunctions using apostrophes. We will also use compare and contrast skills in our reading. Week of Nov. 5th: We are enjoying our novel a great deal and learning more about character traits as we compare and contrast the various characters. We are also investigating "point of view" and will do some cool activities with this skill. Week of Nov. 12th: This week we really got into some of the conflict with our novel, and how sad it was. The students are really into this novel and I am glad they're enjoying the story. We will be working on "Point of View and continuing with quotation marks and commas plus comparing and contrasting characters. With the latter, we are doing a short writing piece! Week of Dec. 3: This week we are wrapping up our novel and processing all the great things we have learned in this challenging read. Week of January 7th: Welcome back to the New Year. We are reading Hatchet by Gary Paulson and the kids are loving this adventure story. We will do write to read with this exciting novel and I am collaborating with Mrs. Pharazyn on this project so that when the students go back to their home room, they continue with the discussions. Week of Jan. 22: This week we are doing a survival activity where we simulate a crash and rank the things we have to use in order to survive!! This goes along with our novel Hatchet, and we are having great discussions with this novel!! We are also writing about what we are reading. Week of Jan. 28th: We completed our survival study and the kids learned a great deal about how to think about things from a different angle! Our writing is coming along and we are ready to push on in our novel. Week of Feb. 11th: Our writing has improved and students are making better paragraphs. We are really enjoying our novel. Week of Feb. 25th: Students may read the rest of the novel now and we will wrap up our study of this book this week!! We have survived!! Week of March 11th: We are working on our latest writing piece and students are doing great work. Our paragraphs are much more focused and we are using better sentence structure!! Week of April 1: Welcome back!! There is lots of exciting things happening in class. We will continue our voyage on the great ship Titanic and do some creative writing with this topic. Testing is coming up soon, April 9th. Week of April 15th: We are enjoying our Titanic study. We made ice bergs and then floated them in a tank of water to observe the characteristics of icebergs. We are keeping our journals and doing some fantastic creative writings!! Week of May 6 & 13th: We are concluding our study of the Titanic and finding out whether we survived or not! Great job with student journals of our voyage!! Happy end of year to all. Have a great summer and enjoy a good book or two!! |

We are currently reading the novel A Long Way From Chicago which is one of my favorites and kids really enjoy the rich, colorful characters and funny antics involved in the plot! We are analyzing characters with this novel, doing vocabulary enrichment, learning about the depression, etc. In addition, our September menu has paragraph enrichment with task cards that help our writing skills. Grammar focus is parts of speech. To sharpen critical thinking skills we are doing Mensa Mind Mazes, Clue and Logic Puzzles! The kids love these!!! Week of Sept. 10-21: We have launched into our Abravocabra study and everyone did a great job on Test 1!!!! We are also reading chapter 2 of A long Way From Chicago and our discussion of the details was great! I could tell students were digging for details and a deep understanding of this novel. Menu's are a great challenge for us as we dig for better paragraph structure, critical thinking skills and such. We are reviewing parts of speech for grammer. Week of Sept. 24: We have had an amazing discussion on character traits and character motives in our novel, A Long Way to Chicago. Students are creating some cool news casts to show what's going on in the book and some reports on famous people from the era! Personal Narratives are on the horizon. Week of Oct. 8th: We are looking into plural nouns and those that are irregular so we can help our writing skills. Also, we have been looking at topics for our personal narratives. Great work kids on Abravocabra # 3!!! Menu choices will also include punctuation dialogue task cards for our narratives as well. Week of October 15th: We are focusing on our personal narrative writings. We are also working on context clues in our novel. Week of Oct. 22: We continue to work on personal narratives and also menu choices. We are wrapping up our novel and really enjoying the characters in this literary work!! Week of Oct. 29th: We will continue to work on our personal narratives as well as our new abravocabra #5. In addition, we will work on using apostrophes correctly and quotations! Week of Nov. 5th: This week we are working on our personal narratives and adding rich details, checking spelling and grammar. We will continue to learn more about apostrophes, quotation marks, and commas. Students are also doing a one hour mystery to develop critical thinking skills and make good inferences. Week of Nov. 12th: We will be wrapping up our novel this week. A special surprise awaits the students on Friday!! In skills, we are also wrapping up our personal narratives. Main idea, theme and summarizing are some of the skills we will focus on. We will not do an abravocabra this week. Week of December 3: We are working on our "Christmas Carol" Play and the students are really excited. Look for more news soon Week of Dec. 17th Our Christmas Carol play will be on Dec 18th. first thing in the morning and we welcome all our parents to join us!!! Week of Jan. 7: Our New Year is off to a great start. We have two novels to choose from! One is In the line of fire, Eight Women War Spies! The other is Blood on the River. The students have chosen which they would like to read and we will do writing with these two books and share our thoughts with summaries, opinions and the like. Abravocabra is our vocabulary focus and of course we do critical thinking with Mensa's and logic problems to make inferences. Week of Jan. 14th: We have two novel studies going and will be writing about our reading with high level questions in our discussions. Week of Jan. 21: We are continuing with our novel choices and doing some fabulous writing! Week of Jan. 28th: We are really enjoying our novels of choice and doing some great writing with them. Students have a calendar of what to have read in order to prepare for class! Week of Feb: 11th: We continue with our two novels of choice. The students are digging deep in their understanding of the novels and making great connections. Assignments are on their individual calendars. Week of Feb. 25th: We are enjoying our novels and learning great things about the Jamestown colony in our novel. The spy novel is really cool and our writing is coming along nicely. Students are making better paragraphs and using good sentences. Week of March 11th: We have wrapped up our novels and are working on our projects related to the novels. The writing pieces that were done have really shown growth in writing ability!! Week of April 1: Welcome back from Spring break!! We have lots of exciting things happening with our classes these last few weeks of school. Testing is April 9-17. Week of April 15: This week we are focusing on our novel Hatchet and really enjoying this book. We are also doing some survival games to prioritize things we might need in a survival situation!! Week of April 29th: Testing is now over and we are moving on with our novel Hatchet. Comprehension skills as well as writing skills are being used and we will wrap up our survival game! Week of May 6 & 13th: We are wrapping up our unit of study and heading strong to the finish line!! Great work on context clues, and learning new vocabulary!! |
